2. Multi-use Path

SETTING: Scenic, tranquil locations away from road traffic. Could be constructed in preserved open space created with parks, conservation subdivisions, or neo-traditional neighborhoods.

EXAMPLE: Unused portion of Johnnie Brook Road or between fields are river bank-whichever best achieves the needs of path users and farm operations and leaves a vegetated buffer between trail and river bank for bank stabiliation and prevention of soil run-off.

OBJECTIVES: safe and enjoyable experiences for a wide range of path users and abilities. Farmland conservation.

DESIGN: Path with 8-10' wide tread plus 2' wide shoulder on both sides and an additional 1' setback from fencing. Gravel foundation with crushed rock surface, crowned with 3% side slopes to shed water and thereby enable use of path in wtter conditions. If path is located where mud will be depositied during floods, a harder surface may be necessary in order to remove mud without disturbing path surface.

IMPROVEMENTS: Remove organic soil where tread and shoulders will be located and replace with well-drained, frost-freee material to enable use in all seasons. Fence where necessary to complement farm operations and locate gates that enable farm use of the path for short distances on both the approaches to bridge over Johnnie Brook.

COST: $10.00 to $20.00 per linear foot.
