7. Rural Major Collector with Bike LaneSETTING: Where paved road provides convenient travel route and traffic volumes and vehicle speeds are high, more than 2000 average daily trips and 45 m.p.h., respectively. If roadways are close to subdivisions, the bike paths could be connected to bike paths within conservation subdivisions, parks, and neo-traditional subdivisions. EXAMPLE: Route 2 OBJECTIVE: One way paved bike lanes for mature and experienced bicylists to travel safely and efficiently along side and in the same direction as motor vehicles. DESIGN: Delineate bike lanes from motor vehicle travel lanes with 6-8" wide painted, solid white liens. Minimum bike lane widths of 4' where there is no curb or guardrail, 5' where there is a curb or guardrail, and 6' where motor vehicle speed exceeds 45 m.p.h. |

IMPROVEMENTS: Extend roadway foundation where necessary to increase shoulder widths from existing 2' +/- width to6' and delineate lanes with 6-8" wide painted, solid white stripes. Paint standard white reflectorized bicycle symbols in lanes on far side of each intersection and on long uninterrupted sections of roadway to inform bicyclists and motorists that the lane is for preferential use by bicylists. These improvements are needed whether or not Route 2 is designated par of the Cross Vermont Trail. COST: Depends on the amount of additional foundation material that is needed. |
